Winamp adds support for WebM video

The list of supporters for Google's open WebM video container continues to expand at a rapid pace -- and while most of the news you've probably read has been centered around web browsers and HTML5 video, desktop media apps are starting to add support.

Apps like AOL's own Winamp, which just announced support for WebM in an official blog post. It may not seem like a very big deal, but Winamp is still one of the most widely used media players around and it's one of the first to arrive at the WebM party. Of course, with WebM added to FFmpeg there's a whole army of applications based on the open source project which can now claim support as well.

Now let's hope MPEG-LA's talk about that damned patent pool being assembled turns out to be all smoke and no fire... Let us enjoy our open video in peace, mmkay?Winamp adds support for WebM video originally appeared on Download Squad on Mon, 19 Jul 2010 12:30:00 EST.
