Comics as Literature, Part 6: Men in Tights

Superheroes present a tricky subject: on the one hand, they're what sent comic books soaring, and they've become so identified with comics books that ? for many people ? they're practically synonymous. Unfortunately, with their brightly colored costumes and over-the-top abilities, superheroes (and thus comic books) have also become associated with other, less-favorable terms: cheesy, mindless, childish. People using the term "comic book" to describe something usually mean it as an insult ? something flat and two-dimensional and not very deep at all.

Today's post lists some books about superheroes (or other characters with amazing abilities) which put that assumption to the test. Despite what Dork Tower says, can superheroes be profound?
