Top 10 Things Science Fiction Promised Us That DID Happen in 2010

Earlier this week I published a list of top 10 things science fiction promised us that didn’t happen in 2010. So, lest you think I’m completely negative, let’s take a look at a few things that did happen in 2010 that were predicted in science fiction. The funny thing about progress is that it’s rarely [...]

KinEmote controls Boxee or XBMC via your Kinect

The Microsoft Kinect hacks just keep on coming, and we'll probably be seeing even more cool apps released now that first-party drivers are available for download. Today, we've got a glimpse at a new open source project called KinEmote in action. It's designed to take advantage of your Kinect in its natural habitat: the living room.

KinEmote is a -- you guessed it -- remote control app which allows you to interact with both Boxee and XBMC from across the room. Check out the video demo after the break to get a look at what controlling your media center PC could be like with a Kinect plugged into it!

Xmarks bookmark sync for Dolphin Browser HD now available in Android Market

If there's one thing that would make me switch from Dolphin Mini to Dolphin HD on my Android phone, it's the fact that HD offers add-on support. Favorites browser enhancements like LastPass and AdBlock are already available, and now there's one more worth installing: Xmarks.

The bookmark sync extension is now available in the Android Market and ready to keep your Dolphin HD favorites marching in step with desktop browsers -- including Internet Explorer, Firefox, Google Chrome, and Safari. There's not much to see in the Dolphin HD version of Xmarks. Enter your login details, choose whether you want to merge your bookmarks or replace your current Dolphin HD data, and enable auto-sync if you desire. If you have multiple sync profiles configured in Xmarks, you'll be able to select which one you want to use in Dolphin.

An Xmarks premium account is required, but at $12 per year that's pretty easy to justify for full-blown bookmark sync between your desktop browser of choice and one of the best Android browsers available. Scan the QR Code after the break, or hit up the link below to install.

Addoway Is Like eBay With A Social Streak

If you've ever gone shopping on eBay, you know how important seller ratings can be ?take a stab with someone who has less than a 90-something approval rating, and you're testing your luck. And even when you've found someone with a satisfactory rating, the descriptions left by other buyers tend to be mostly useless (A++++, anyone?), which makes the whole thing feel a little risky regardless. Oh, and sellers can always get scammed by buyers, which makes it even more fun. Addoway is an e-commerce site that looks to help reduce these feelings of anxietyby using Facebook Connect to help you find sellers that your friends have had good experiences dealing with in the past. The site launched eight months ago, and is currently drawing 90,000 uniques a month.

Updated Android Music app leaks out

Thanks to an eager (and extremely active) developer community, early access to upcoming Android bits has become somewhat of a regular occurrence. Recently we've seen the Gingerbread launcher and updated Market app, and now a user at xda-developers has released an early version of what will become the next Music app for Android.

It's still a bit rough around the edges, but it looks like it's going to be a very nice upgrade to the built-in player. Check out the gallery, or the video after the break, or grab the .APK installer over at the xda-developers forums. As always, caveat emptor!

Angry Birds 'level skip' Mighty Eagle in-app purchase now available -- costs $1!

Angry Birds Mighty Eagle
Those cheeky, purse-squeezing capitalists over at Rovio have released yet another Angry Birds update. Not only does the latest version include some new levels ("Ham 'em High"), but you can now buy the Mighty Eagle. It's an in-app purchase, and it'll cost you either $1, a few British pennies, or a handful of Euro cents.

The Mighty Eagle is a new item that lets you skip the current level, and unlock the next. Despite paying $1 for the luxury, you can only use the level-skip once per hour. There will undoubtedly be a $5 Mightier Eagle in 2011 that removes the 1-hour limitation. The Mighty Eagle also introduces a new Eagle Feather achievement, which you can get by filling up a "destruction gauge." Chrikee.

In other news, if you haven't been following the Angry Birds industry, 50 million copies of the game have now been sold. Rovio promise that 2011 will be exciting, too: Angry Birds will be released on even more platforms, including every major video game console.

Sophisticated Android Geinimi Trojan appears in the wild

Over at the Lookout Mobile Security blog there's news of a sophisticated new trojan spreading on Android devices. Dubbed Geinimi, the Trojan has been injected into legitimate versions of Android games (primarily) and apps, and distributed via third-party app stores in China.

While Lookout isn't certain of Geinimi's intent, the company believes it to be capable of receiving commands from a central server, and that the trojan can also collect and transmit a significant amount of user data. Lookout also believes there is a possibility that Geinimi could be laying the groundwork for an Android botnet.

As Lookout points out, it's easy enough to protect yourself:
  • Don't install apps from untrusted third-party application markets
  • Don't enable Android's "install from unknown sources" setting
  • Install a good anti-malware app on your device
There are plenty of good, free anti-malware apps available for Android devices -- like AVG, Creative Apps Antivirus, NetQin Antivirus, and, of course, Lookout's own offering. Search for one in the market, or hit up the AppBrain links after the break!

Sprint's 3G / 4G MiFi 4082 revealed?

Wasn't long ago that we found hard evidence of a WiMAX-capable MiFi from Novatel in the FCC -- and now, we might have the first press shot of it. Of course, press shots are always prettier than the actual devices, but even if you beat this image with the ugly stick for a minute or two, we're pretty sure it'd still be a good deal more handsome than the first-gen 3G MiFi that Sprint, Verizon, and others are using currently. No word on when this might launch, but with FCC certification under its belt, it's plausible that we'll see it next week at CES -- probably without the tipster's own professionally-Photoshopped status light below the battery indicator, we'd bet.

[Thanks, r0fl]
