To take advantage of this deal, customers should be on T-Mobile’s Simple Choice Plan, and are subject to credit approval.

Starbucks Is Partnering with Google to Give Its Wi-Fi a Serious Caffeine Boost

Starbucks announced that it is dropping AT&T, and instead partnering with Google to provide the free Wi-Fi networks offered in its coffee shops. The new network will be about 10 times faster, and will make Starbucks an even more popular ?office? destination for nomadic business users.

The transition from Google to AT&T won?t happen overnight. Starbucks plans to start over the next month with the busiest locations (busiest meaning the ones with the highest Wi-Fi usage, not the ones that sell the most coffee necessarily). Starbucks predicts it will take about 18 months, though, to roll out Google Wi-Fi to all 7,000 stores across the United States.

This is huge news for business users. Remote workers, traveling road warriors, and small and medium business entrepreneurs who don?t have the budget for a ?real? office have long set up shop at Starbucks. The combination of cozy seating, available power outlets, free Wi-Fi, and a steady supply of caffeine make it virtually ideal. You can walk into just about any Starbucks and find a handful of customers who have set up shop like they live there.

You can find a Starbucks almost anywhere. In a metropolitan area, you?re likely to trip over one every 300 yards or so. Having free Wi-Fi at Starbucks is convenient, but the slower network speed limits what you can get done. It?s great for checking email, or doing a little Web surfing, but trying to engage in a Skype call, or a Lync video conference would be unwise. The choppy audio, or pixelated, buffering video would be more frustrating than its worth.

AT&T expands LTE to ten new markets

AT&T Logo

The nationwide network rollout continues with more markets this week.

As AT&T works to roll out its LTE network nationwide, it's going to be darn sure that people know about every single city that it launches in. This week we're looking at ten new markets that will have access to the higher speed network. Provided that you have an LTE handset (most do nowadays) and the proper provisioning on your account, if you live in one of the following markets you should see LTE live now:

webOS 3.0 beta now available to developers

hp touchpad webos 3.0
With the webOS 3.0 SDK available for almost two months, HP has now given developers access to a beta download of webOS 3.0 -- which powers the upcoming TouchPad and will likely ride along on HP desktops and laptops in the form of an emulator.

Right now, the webOS 3.0 beta is only available to Early Access developers. The crew at PreCentral states that HP appears to have eased up on access restrictions, however, so hopefully more devs will get on board and those of you who are planning to buy a TouchPad in the next couple months will have plenty of slick webOS 3.0 apps to install on your new tablet.

AVG launches LiveKive cloud sync and backup tool

avg livekive dropbox
A while back, we told you about AVG's new LiveKive service, a new cloud synchronization and backup tool which appears to have been named after a vat in which mash is made during the brewing process. But enough about AVG's odd choice of monikers -- LiveKive has launched and is now ready to accept your files into the AVG cloud.

LiveKive takes aim at services like Dropbox and SugarSync, though at the moment it's lagging behind in terms of features. As it stands, LiveKive is only compatible with Windows and OS X. There are no mobile clients yet, though with AVG's strong presence on Android we wouldn't be surprised to see an app arrive in the near future.

The company is offering a heck of a deal right now, however. If you sign up for a paid account during the launch phase, you can score unlimited storage for $80 for a whole year. You can't even score 50GB per year at that price from Dropbox, so if cost and space are more important to you than cross-platform availability, LiveKive might be worth checking out.

If you're not interested in ponying up any cash at the moment, you can still get a 5GB account free of charge. Just head on over, and create a LiveKive account.

Oracle's next 'engineered system' to involve virtualization

Oracle is preparing to roll out the latest member of its family of ?engineered systems? that combine software and hardware, with the upcoming product focused on virtualization.

The company will discuss the new system on Aug. 13, during a webcast featuring Wim Coekaerts, senior vice president of Linux and virtualization, according to an announcement on Oracle?s website.

No proper name for the new machine was listed in the post, or a specific general-availability date. An Oracle spokeswoman said Wednesday that no further information was available at this time.

Customers who buy the virtualization appliance will be able to ?install and deploy [their] virtual infrastructure in just hours,? according to the blog post. The system ?provides a converged infrastructure powered by Oracle VM server virtualization and Oracle Virtual Networking, dramatically enhancing data center operations,? it adds.

Ask DLS: Cross-platform multiplayer games that work on Android and iOS

askdls
Here's one for our knowledgeable commenters: I recently bought my girlfriend an iPad. I, on the other hand, own an Android device. And now we're looking for games we can play using both devices.

There's no dearth of multiplayer games either for Android or for iOS. But finding multiplayer games that can cross the platform boundary is an entirely different matter.

Jay recently posted Words with Friends which is one such game. It's actually an ideal example, because it's turn-based so you don't necessarily both have to be next to your device at the same time (great for long-distance gaming).

But what other examples are there? What multiplayer games are there that let iOS users play with Android users?

[Why am I now humming 'Ebony and Ivory'? -Ed]

VMware adds Mozy to its cloud and virtualization empire

mozy vmware
Mozy is one of the most popular cloud backup services around, with more than one million users storing around 70 petabytes of data. Its popularity apparently put it on the acquisition radar of VMware -- which has now made Mozy part of its virtualization empire.

VMware's official blog post makes it clear that the company wasn't so much interested in Mozy as a consumer offering. Rather, it's the inner workings of Mozy which piqued VMware's curiosity. CTO Steve Herrod says, "Over the past 5 years, Mozy has built one of the best examples of a globally distributed, large-scale cloud offering." He adds that the move will allow VMware to "further ramp our own cloud-related learning and accelerate new IP, scale, and capabilities" of its existing offerings.

Existing Mozy customers don't need to worry, of course. VMware has pledged to continue running Mozy's service without interruption.

Google holds back on open-sourcing Honeycomb, heralds massive shift for Android

Android Honeycomb
Google, in an interesting but not entirely unexpected twist, will not be open-sourcing Android 3.0 Honeycomb for the foreseeable future.

Historically, Android is usually open-sourced via the Android Open Source Project (AOSP) a few days or weeks after the code is finalized. While this departure from the norm won't affect OEMs like HTC and Motorola that have access to internal builds of Android, small-time developers will likely have to wait months before rolling their own distributions.

As to why Google is holding back Honeycomb, its reasons are actually rather rational. Honeycomb, while originally intended to run on all mobile form factors, is only ready for deployment on tablets. "To make our schedule to ship the tablet, we made some design tradeoffs," says Andy Rubin, the head of Google's Android group. "We didn't want to think about what it would take for the same software to run on phones. It would have required a lot of additional resources and extended our schedule beyond what we thought was reasonable. So we took a shortcut."

In other words, Google wants to prevent OEMs and homebrew developers like Cyanogen from rolling their own smartphone versions of Honeycomb -- it doesn't want to see the same bitter-tasting tabletified bastardization that occurred with Android 2.1 and 2.2 last year.

Samsung to launch TDD/FDD dual-mode LTE GS4, S4 Mini

GS4 and Mini

Samsung will launch new variants of its Galaxy S4 and Galaxy S4 Mini handsets with dual-mode TDD-LTE and FDD-LTE connectivity, the company has announced. While current LTE networks are primarily based upon FDD-LTE the standard, Samsung's new devices will be able to operate on these networks in addition to TDD-LTE networks expected to launch soon in Asia and Eastern Europe.

Samsung said its new dual-mode LTE Galaxy S4s will be the first handsets to market to support "seamless handover" between the two standards, with "continuous and seamless voice and data communications even as the devices switch between two different types of LTE networks." While Samsung hasn't specified which countries will be getting these new dual-mode handsets, smooth handover between the two standards will be particularly important in markets where both TDD and FDD are deployed.

NODE modular sensor gets color scanning capability

Image

What's a modular sensor without modules? The folks behind Node have released the iPhone peripheral's fifth end cap, the NODE+chroma, a sensor that scans colors, transmitting that data to your handset via Bluetooth 4.0. The $99 add-on features white LED light, capturing a reading in around a second, regardless of the influence of ambient light. You can pick up the new module over at Node's site, along with climate, gas, thermometer sensors and an LED flashlight. And while you're at it, you should probably pick up the $149 Node as well, or those sensors won't be of much use.
